Division 15 is sponsoring a fullday Institute entitled “Counseling With Older Adults With Hearing Loss, Their Families and Related Professionals” at the 2002 ASHA Convention in Atlanta. This will provide an opportunity for those working with older adults to increase their knowledge of counseling. Continuing Education Units may be earned. Three morning sessions will provide counseling basics, cultural considerations, and contextual approaches for counseling. Three concurrent afternoon sessions will allow participants to focus on discipline-specific strategies and approaches.
Noted author of “Applications of Counseling in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology,” Thomas Crowe, a clinically certified speechlanguage pathologist, chair of the Department of Communicative Disorders and director of the Center for Speech and Hearing Research at the University of Mississippi, will open the Institute with a presentation on what constitutes meaningful, achievable goals for counseling with older adults and their families. This will include practical strategies for counseling and information on how to assess outcomes.
