Did you know:
  • On average, in America, one older person commits suicide every 82 minutes.

  • The suicide rate for individuals aged 80 to 84 is almost twice that of the general population.

  • Elderly white males are at the highest risk.

  • More than 80% of the patients committing such suicides had visited their primary care physician within a month of their death; 20% had done so within 24 hours.

While working with the depressed patients’ speech or hearing concerns, it may often seem that older people tend to deny feeling depressed and are uncomfortable with the word depression. Many were raised in an era when people did not talk about their feelings, and emotional problems were perceived as character flaws that required “pulling yourself up by the boot straps” and “toughing it out.” However, if health care professionals are uncomfortable asking about it too, the depressed person may continue to suffer needlessly.
