The International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) was published by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2001. Since its publication, it has been discussed as a framework for the field of communication disorders (Kagan, Elman, & Simmons-Mackie, 2002; Eadie, 2003; Worrall & Hickson, 2003; Hopper, 2004; Threats & Worrall, 2004; Simmons-Mackie, 2004; Ripich & Horner, 2004; Yaruss & Quesal, 2004). In addition, ASHA has used the ICF as the framework for the Scope of Practice for Speech-Language Pathology, Scope of Practice for Audiology, and the Preferred Practice Patterns for the Profession of Speech-Language Pathology (ASHA, 2001, 2003, 2004). These publications describe the components of the ICF and how they can be used to further develop and refine our thinking with respect to those we serve.
